LIVESTREAMING: 61st Independence Day celebration

Today, Tuesday March 6, 2018 marks 61 years since Ghana attained independence after 100 years of British colonial rule.

Ghana, formerly known as the Gold Coast, became the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to gain independence in 1957 which was led by the nation’s founding President Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

Since then, the people of Ghana have been celebrating the end of colonial rule and the dawn of independence where tens of thousands gather in the capital, Accra to relive the moment.

President Nana Akufo-Addo will take the national salute, deliver a speech of solidarity to Ghanaians and light the perpetual flame at the iconic Black Star Square.

Reportedly, the only foreign leader attending the historic event is Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari who arrived yesterday.

The Nigerian leader is scheduled to address the august gathering. A statement by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesin said that President Buhari will use the unique opportunity to reaffirm the long-standing warm relations between the peoples and governments of both nations.

The president and his delegation, which includes, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, and the National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno, will return to Abuja after the celebrations on Tuesday.
