Members of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly on Friday massively confirmed Iddrisu Musah Superior as the Metropolitan Chief Executive despite earlier concerns he did not appear before a regional vetting committee.
Some members of the NPP in the Northern regional capital mildly opposed the nomination by the President saying the nominee deliberately refused to turn up for scrutiny by a committee vetting candidates vying for Metropolitan Municipal and District executive position.
According to the party’s regional communication director, Mohammed Abdul Kudus the committee scrutinized loyalty and competence of contestants for the MMDAs top job.
Mr. Musah inability to appear before the committee was seen by a group called Citizens Network of NPP as a gross display of irreverence to the interviewing panel.
The group convener Mohammed Ishmael had vowed to ensure the nominee never gets confirmed however on Friday, March 17, 2017 members of the Assembly gave the nominee an unprecedented approval.
Forty (40) elected members and 17 government appointees all voted to affirm the nominee in the event that ended without any incident.
No ballot was rejected and all voters who turned up voted in favour of the nominee.
Speaking after the confirmation, the new Mayor said his decisive victory was a demonstration that political and chieftaincy differences were not barriers to development.
He thanked the President for the opportunity and extended his gratitude to the honorable members for “unflinching support” assuring that he was going to be a servant than a leader.
“Today, collectively and decisively the people of Tamale have decided to move on. Today, we have demonstrated that the NPP, NDC, Abudu and Andani cannot be a barrier for development.
” The problems of Tamale are not challenging and we Tamale people are going to fix the problems. We are going to work with chiefs, Imams, clergy and the young people of Tamale”, Musah Superior assures.
The event was witnessed by the Northern regional minister, Salifu Saeed, Security heads, Chiefs, party executives and supporters; and supervised by the Mr. Emmanuel Abiem Danso, Northern regional deputy director of the electoral commission.
