The minister-designate for Health, Kwaku Agyemang-Manu has said the ailing National Health Insurance Scheme will work again if given the nod as the sector minister.
Responding to questions by the appointments committee of Parliament on how he was going to rescue the insurance scheme, Mr. Agyemang-Manu said he will ensure that whatever needs to be done to see to it that the scheme works will be executed.
According to him, while serving as Deputy Minister of Finance in the Kufuor administration, he worked extensively with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health and Finance on the Act that established the NHIS and subsequently became the acting Chief Executive Officer of the NHIS, hence he has what it takes to deal with the challenges confronting the scheme.
The NHIS was established under Act 650 of 2003 by the Government of Ghana to provide basic healthcare services to persons resident in the country through mutual and private health insurance schemes.
The District Mutual, Private Mutual and Private Commercial Schemes are regulated by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).
