The first President of Ghana, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, ranked number one in a GhanaWeb poll on which of the country's presidents has been the best in its history.

The poll was held from Thursday, July 11, 2024, to Sunday, July 14, 2024, following a public debate on Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s legacy after the vice-presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), asserted that the current President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has performed better than all past presidents of the country, including the first president.

The poll, which had about 17,000 readers of GhanaWeb participating in it, asked which president has been the best in Ghana’s history between the late Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the late Dr. Hilla Limann, the late Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings, John Agyekum Kufuor, the late Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, John Dramani Mahama, and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Out of the nearly 17,000 respondents, over 60%, representing over 10,000 participants, indicated that Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was the best president in Ghana’s history.

Former President John Dramani Mahama, the current flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, came a distant second with over 14% of respondents (2,421 participants) saying he is the second best president the country has ever had.

The current president, Akufo-Addo, came third with 1,964 participants, representing nearly 12% of the respondents, saying he is the third best the country has had.

Former presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Jerry John Rawlings took the 4th and 5th positions respectively.

Over 8% of the respondents said Kufuor is the best president in Ghana’s history, while nearly 3% said it is Rawlings.

The late Prof. Mills took the 6th position with nearly 2% of the participants saying he is the best the country has ever had, while the late Dr. Limann came in 7th with less than 1% of the respondents saying he is the best.
