A group calling itself Arise for Change & Development (AFCAD) has described former CEO of the Volta River Authority (VRA), Dr Charles Wereko-Brobby, who is on a two-year suspension from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), as “morally unfit” to serve under President Nana Akufo-Addo.
This follows a comment by Dr Wereko-Brobby that he is amenable to serving in the Akufo-Addo government if given the opportunity.
“I don’t think I want to be a minister now, I am beyond that. I have served in different positions, so, I think others must be given the opportunity to also play their part, but I am willing to serve in other roles. I will say I am ready to serve,” Dr Wereko-Brobby told Bola Ray last week, adding that Nana Akufo-Addo as flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was the only one who “voted against my suspension”.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, 28 February, however, AFCAD said: “We are very much surprised and peeved” to hear on different occasions that Dr Wereko-Brobby, as well as former Chief of Staff Kwadwo Mpiani, whose loyalty to the NPP was questioned when the party was in opposition, have expressed interest in working for the Akufo-Addo government.
“In fact the problem we clearly have as a country is when people who are supposed to know better cannot for once think and act based on their conscience and with common sense,” AFCAD said in a statement.
With specific reference to Dr Wereko-Brobby, popularly known as Tarzan, AFCAD said: “Your competence as you claim cannot be discredited but perhaps, it is not only the competence that pays. Our loyalty, self-dedication, love and respect to party decisions are what count most.
“Ghanaians are aware of how you greedily benefited from NPP-Kufuor administration when made the CEO to VRA & GH@50. AFCAD and all the NPP youth again recall vividly how we stood and defended you when summoned before the Public Accounts Committee for misappropriation.
“Moreover, we can never forget how you and your colleagues through your actions and inactions stabbed your own party at its back. You stood with the NDC day and night to vilify the party and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo because of your selfish interest,” the group said.
The statement added: “AFCAD wishes to make it clear to Tarzan & co. that:
1. You are traitors and a threat to the NPP and Nana Addo’s administration.
2. The NPP as you claimed some time past - "CHAOS PARTY" - will never allow any of you to join this administration.
3. A party that lost its basic principles as claimed by some of you will not allow you to reap what you did not sow.
4. You have no moral rights to serve under the vice president you once described as "CLUELESS"
“We, therefore, want to tell you that AFCAD and the youth in the party will rise up against any appointment that may be offered by the president. We take this opportunity to warn all others who stood against the NPP and the president to stop their recent sycophantic moves at the presidency in lobbying for contracts and appointments. Our party always rewards hardworking and dedicated members, not selfish traitors. And the grassroots who stood for the party shall be unpleasantly surprised and disappointed if the party and the presidency allow such elements to succeed.”
The group warned Dr Wereko-Brobby, Mr Mpiani, and other stalwarts whose loyalty they questioned in the past such as suspended Chairman Paul Afoko, suspended first Vice Chair Kwabena Agyapong, and suspended founder-member Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe to “stay away from the Nana-Bawumia administration for their own good”.
The statement is jointly signed by Antwi Boasiako, president; Mamoah Elijah, Coordinator; and Yussif Abdul Kudus, Secretary.
