Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana, Most Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante, has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to be transparent and consider the national interest in the way forward concerning the call for a new voters' register.
According to Rev. Prof. Asante, an independent body must be set up by the EC to ensure that the right decision is taken.
“All we need to do is to ensure that at least we have an independent body, a credible body that we can trust, to look into the matter with or without the presence of the political parties so that at the end of it all we will be able to come out with a consensus agreement on the position in respect of the voters' register,” Rev. Prof. Asante told host of Morning Starr Nii Arday Clegg Friday.
He also urged the nation’s security agencies to enforce the law with circumspection cautioning that over-zealousness in enforcing the law could set the nation on fire.
“I will plead with the Police they have the responsibility to maintain law and order, but their responsibility to maintain law and order is not to deny people their human rights.
“Even where people have breached what is expected to be done, they should that with circumspection, they should enforce the law with circumspection,” Rev. Prof. Asante added.
