Minister-designate for Youth & Sports, Hon. Isaac Kwame Asiamah, has revealed that the famous Winneba Sports College is not accredited by the National Accreditation Board (NAB) and so cannot run any program of study to attract the youth.

“Mr. Chairman, the Winneba Sports College is not accredited and it can be best described as a sports training center. So, Ghana cannot boast of a single college of sports,” he noted.

The development, he noted, is hugely affecting the development of the sports sector, noting that a lot of the youth who are desirous to pursue academic programs in sports have no place in the Ghanaian society.

To curb this problem, he said one critical project which is dear to his heart and which falls in line with his political party’s manifesto – thus the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is to get the legal framework for the establishment of Colleges of Sports in the Middle, Coastal and Savannah Belts of the country.

These sports colleges, he noted, will in collaboration with the Ministry of Education design programs of study that will meet the needs of young people desirous to pursue programs in sports.

Hon. Asiamah made these observations, Tuesday, when he took his turn at the Appointments Committee of Parliament for public hearing on issues relating to the Ministry he has been designated to by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Commenting further on the issue, he told the Committee that he was happy that some works have already been started by the previous NDC government in the area of the establishment of sports colleges, noting that the project will vigorously be pursued.
